Presentación y objetivos

The idea that cells remember past states to prepare their future endeavors has split into two parallel languages that rarely converse. On one side, chromatin epigenetics defines inheritance through the material continuity of molecular marks such as chromatin modifications, which can be faithfully propagated through replication and mitosis. On the other, regulatory network epigenetics views memory as an emergent property of circuit dynamics such as feedback loops, attractor states, and gene modules that retain information across cell generations. Each framework has achieved remarkable depth and explanatory power, profoundly shaping our understanding of development, homeostasis and disease. Yet, their integration remains incomplete.

This workshop seeks to collapse these views into a unified perspective by placing chromatin inheritance and network memory in direct dialogue, from chromatin states to gene circuits: we aim at building a shared understanding of transcriptional memory as a multi-layered, dynamically encoded system of inheritance. Only by merging and integrating molecular and systems perspectives in molecular, physical and mathematical frameworks, can we fully explain how stability and flexibility coexist in living systems, how these principles are subverted in disease, and how they might be harnessed for therapeutic innovation.

Together, we will replace parallel monologues with a true dialogue between chromatin inheritance and regulatory network memory, laying the foundations for a predictive and reprogrammable understanding of cellular identity.

Format of the workshop

The workshop will bring together 15 specialists representing different cross-border reserves, with a special focus on aquatic ecosystems. Renowned academic experts, developing innovative managing solutions will share their findings and experiences.

Conferences will take place during the morning, followed by general discussions and guided debates based on different case studies. The daily workshops will be closured in a general assembly highlighting main conclusions and recommendations.

Afternoons networking space will enable young and senior researchers to liaise, exchange ideas and discuss potential collaboration opportunities through dynamic activities and informal meetings such as mentoring sessions, thematic working groups and participative debates.

Up to 35 additional participants are encouraged to present Posters with brief explanations during intermediate sessions.

Venue of the workshop

The workshop will be held in Baeza, at the “Antonio Machado Headquarters”, a XVII century building turned into a Conference Centre of the International University of Andalusia (UNIA). A complex made up of two historic buildings: the Jabalquinto Palace (XV/XVI centuries) and the old Seminary (XVII century) located in the heart of the historic complex, among the old University, church of Santa Cruz, the cathedral and the Upper Town Halls.

This site includes a recently restored residence, where speakers and participants will be accommodated. This same space is where the meetings will be held, which facilitates social interaction and informal discussions.

Baeza is a world historic heritage town, renowned for its Renaissance and Gothic buildings.
